Tournament details

Structure

The tournament will use the latest iteration of the World Riichi Championship rules. Please consult this link for the full rules. We will also use lower penalties and a 90+0 time limit (after the game ends, finish the current hand and don’t play any more).

The tournament will feature 8 hanchan. The first 6 hanchan will be pure cumulative play. After game 6, the 4 players with the highest score will have their scores reset and play a two hanchan set to determine positions 1-4. The remaining players will keep their scores and play the last two games as normal to determine positions 5+.

We expect good will and fair sportsmanship from all attendees, be they players or staff. Once a game is finished, we ask players to give their final scores in a timely fashion, and respect those who are still playing by leaving the room quietly.

FAQ

I haven’t totally paid the registration fee. Are there any issues?

You must have paid all registration fees before September 20th at 23:59. We do not accept payments at the door.

If you can’t pay all fees, your registration will be voided. In case of partial payment, you will be reimbursed by the amount you already paid (minus processing fees where applicable).

Complete refunds are only made in the following cases: a late registrant is not able to participate due to numbers, or a player who has been approved to withdraw by tournament staff.

Should a player not be able to participate and know in advance, their registration fee can be transferred to another player before the end of the registration period.

I have a friend / family / other who isn’t playing. Can they be a spectator?

No one besides registered players and tournament staff can be present at the event. This is to prevent cheating and distracting players.

Where do I sit?

The event staff will have planned seating for all players, for all games, before the tournament. Before the first game, you will need to present yourself at the reception table. This will let you get your official tournament badge. Please do not lose it, as it has a number that will identify you for the rest of the event.

What to do in case of cheating?

If you have founded suspicions that a player is cheating, raise your hand and ask for a referee immediately, even if it happens in the middle of a game. The tournament staff will resolve any conflict.

If, for any reason or another, you make any false accusation regarding cheating, the event staff owns the right of disqualifying you from the current game up to and until tournament’s end. You will lose your ranking and points. You will not be allowed to communicate with other players. You will not receive a refund.

What do I do when a game is done?

Players have a right to a quiet environment during the tournament. In order to help them stay concentrated, please remain seated and talk in a low voice when announcing your points to tournament staff. When tallying is done, get up and get out of the tournament room, where you will then be able to converse freely.

If my score drops below zero, do I stop playing?

No; a game ends after the last dealer in the south round loses, or time is up. A special negative twenty thousand (20,000) point stick is available for exchanging with another player. When tallying, staff will note the absence of this stick and deduce the correct amount from your final points.

Montréal is nice this time of year. Can I visit?

It is your responsibility to plan for anything concerning accommodation, food, tickets, transportation, etc. The Club Riichi de Montréal is not responsible for any issue you may encounter during your trip outside of the tournament venue and hours.

But! Please send us any inquiry about interesting sights or events and good places to attend to. Montréal is a nice city, and it will be our pleasure to let you discover it to its fullest.
